Go Back

I was reading the story of Elijah this morning and was particularly struck by this verse.

God says He has ‘commanded’ the widow of Zarephath to look after Elijah. As you continue reading the chapter it becomes blatantly obvious that the woman has no idea she’d been commanded to do that, she seems to be simply reacting to Elijah’s requests. Earlier in the chapter (v4) God says He ‘commanded the ravens’ to feed Elijah. I wonder if they also were equally unaware of having received this command?

Psalm 33:8-9 says “Let all the earth fear the Lord: Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spoke, and it was; He ‘commanded’ and it stood fast”. As we put 2020 behind us with its Covid-19, its election frauds, its threats of a remake of The Princess Bride,  and [insert problem here], let us always remember that God is ALWAYS in charge, NOTHING ever takes Him by surprise, and NOBODY can thwart His plans.

One of my favourite ‘chuckle’ verses is Isaiah 43:13. In the King James Version it reads “Yea, before the day was, I AM He; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand;  I will work, and who shall hinder it?” God is saying “Who’s going to stop me from doing what I want to do?” It’s a rhetorical question; the answer is NOBODY! And the Bible says that God actually laughs at people who attempt to do so. (Ps 2:4, Ps 37:13, etc.)

So, even though it is one of the most taken-out-of-context verses in the Bible, go into 2021 knowing that Jeremiah 29:11 is still true.  God is for you.
